A few years ago, my boys got hooked on Pokemon Go.
They needed an extra account for a gym raid.
So, guess who became a "Pokemon mom"?
Yep. That was me.
I was standing in the backyard. Phone in one hand, cold Sonic drink in the other.
My oldest yelled, "Mom! Quick, you have to spin the Pokestop!"
My youngest grinned. "Don't let your Mewtoo faint again."
I tried to look like I knew what I was doing. I was just hoping not to embarrass myself too much.
But you know what? That's when my teens started talking.
Not just mumbling in the hallway.
Actual conversations. How school felt. Who their friends were. Stuff about Pokemon I pretended to understand.
One time, my nephew peeked at my phone and went, "Aunt April, your Pokedex is lit."
I hadn't seen a twelve-year-old look that proud in a while.
I learned something big.
When you meet your kids where they are, something shifts.
Maybe it's Pokemon Go. Maybe it's some hobby you don't even get.
But those little moments? That's when the big conversations show up.
And let's be honest. I'm a mom who runs on brain fog and coffee.
I will take every easy win I can find.
